As the show goes live, John Belushi walks into the picture through a door 39 seconds late. Lorne Michaels: Listen, my name is Lorne Michaels, I’m the producer of “Saturday Night.” Bouncer: All night? Lorne Michaels: [sarcastically] Yeah, all night. The film opens with a Lorne Michaels quote: “The show doesn’t go on because it’s finished, it goes on because it’s 11:30 p.m.” Seen in Eddie Murphy, the black king of Hollywood (2023).

In that respect, with its long, kinetic takes, it reminded me of an otherwise very different film, Birdman. This is a comedy of perfect errors, culminating in groundbreaking television production just as the medium was taking 90% of Americans by storm. Milton Berle, er, expected loyalty from the hippie generation.
Until it wasn’t
It was a glorious failure. I was skeptical about this film until I sat in the dark theater. Who could imitate the mannerisms of Chevy Chase and John Belushi? Who could capture Dan Ackroyd’s bravura?
Who could dare imitate Gilda Radner’s often enchanting charm?
The actors, especially Gabriel Labelle as visionary weakling Lorne Michaels, pull it all off with joyful aplomb. There are plenty of laughs to be had, whether you remember the mid-1970s or not. It was an entertaining and turbulent time between the Nixon and Reagan eras. But it gave rise to a revolution in television comedy that is still in full swing today.
