Julia’s brother: Julia, I thought I told you to stay out of my–[Art kills him with an axe]
Synopsis
Art the Clown will wreak havoc on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully fall asleep on Christmas Eve. Director Damien Leone said that due to the unexpected success of Terrifier 2 (2022), several major studios had shown interest in financing this film even without a full script, but he turned them all down because he was sure they would never let him film the opening scene alone, which he describes as “very controversial.” Leone suggested that the only reason he can be so uncompromising in portraying horror and gore is because he finances his films independently, creates all of the special effects himself to keep costs down, and doesn’t have a major studio breathing down his neck to make the film more mainstream. Mia mentions that the fifth anniversary of the original massacre is coming up soon, but it took place on Halloween, and for this film to be set on Christmas five years later would mean that the anniversary just passed two months ago. There is an uncut version of the film that is 2 hours and 25 minutes long and contains five additional scenes. Follows Terrifier (2016). A work of artWritten by Drew Fulk, Joe Occhiuti, Paul Wiley, Spencer Charnas, and Steve SopchakPlayed by Ice Nine Kills and Shavo OdadjianThis Terrifier series is fascinating. The first film is kind of crap, it doesn’t really have anything memorable narratively or cinematically other than introducing a memorable villain and featuring impressively grisly violence.
It’s a bit of a nothing film, with no plot and seemingly no interest
It’s a slasher film that isn’t stripped down to its essentials, but somehow broken down even further. Then the second one came along, made the villain even more memorable, and had scenes of bloodshed that proved even more shocking. It also had a pretty good story and character development (I don’t think that’s a popular opinion, but I liked it), and introduced, for lack of a better word, a more intriguing series mythology. Terrifier 3 takes everything the second film did well and does it even better in my opinion. Terrifier 2 felt a little too long at 138 minutes, with Terrifier 3’s slightly shorter runtime helping the pacing tremendously. I still feel surprisingly invested in this series, which is turning into something truly fantastic. They could overdo that side of things at some point, and here they almost do, but I really like what these films have become.
The violence is disgusting
It’s at least as sadistic as the second, maybe more so. Art the Clown is hilarious when he’s not killing people, but I hate him deeply. I love hating him. Without irony, one of the best villains of the last 10 years. He’s Harpo Marx if Harpo was also a serial killer. The final act elevated this film tremendously. Chainsaws have never sounded louder.
I find that impressive, but maybe I’m just easily entertained
I was afraid I was going to have a panic attack and I felt sick to my stomach. I feel a bit shaken up about the whole thing now that it’s over. The sadistic violence played a part, but I think it also mattered to me. These characters have all suffered so much, and I was so invested in them winning. The final scenes had me fidgeting in my seat, more because I was into it than because of the violence. There are some scenes here that feel too cheap, and the pacing isn’t perfect. Also occasional choppy line deliveries and inconsistent acting here and there.
This is the best in the series so far
It ties the first and second films together in a way that felt a little choppy at the beginning. But the second half left me so on edge for the most part, and I have to celebrate a film that moves me like that. There have been some high profile disappointments in the last month as far as new releases go, so I’m really glad that Terrifier 3 was a film that exceeded my expectations.
