Synopsis

When a psychiatrist witnesses a strange, traumatic incident involving a patient, he becomes increasingly convinced that he is being threatened by an unusual entity. A couple of days before the film’s release on September 30, 2022, the actors participated in various baseball games while sitting down. behind home plate, silent and smiling, staring at the camera, not moving despite the understandably worried fans in the crowd wearing smiley shirts. Based on what happens later in the party, there are several continuity issues that aren’t necessarily "bugs" but may actually be intentional to show "interruptions" In Rose’s mind/mind.

After witnessing his professor’s brutal suicide, he appears to be suffering from extreme PTSD. As Rose talks to Laura, she becomes more and more afraid, claiming that some unseen entity is going to kill her. Strange events convince Rose that she is being stalked by a creature; and that he is the next victim. Disturbing Horror, Parker Finn “Smile”; is a chilling look at the lasting effects of trauma. Finn claims that trauma affects every aspect of a person’s life and can be transferred to others through action. Although comparisons to David Robert Mitchell’s “It Follows”; is inevitable, Parker’s film thesis feels fresh and innovative. Traumatic effects such as hallucinations, paranoia and guilt are ingeniously woven into Finn’s story, adding to the psychological horror.

They don’t happen here because they add to Rose’s paranoia

The movie is full of suspense and has a great horror atmosphere. Although the ending is crushing, the journey there is compelling, ominous. Finn makes great use of jump shots, which often feel like a cheap way to make the audience freak out. Her characterization is strong, as is her dialogue, and we believe and empathize with Rose; although we are not sure we can trust his reality. Culturally relevant and disturbing, Finn’s film creates a wild and diabolical ride. Horror needs good sound design to succeed; Finn’s sound department has created an immersive and disturbing environment of horror. Cristobal Tapia de Vere’s score adds to the unsettling mood and turns into chaotic dissonance as Rose becomes paranoid with fear.

Similarly, Charlie Sarroff’s unconventional cinematography adds to the peaceful atmosphere of the picture

Sometimes it reminds me of Dario Argento and Goblin’s Suspiria score; Tapia de Vera’s work increases the film’s impact enormously. Distinctive and creative, his use of low angles, handheld shots and zooms add to the sense of unpredictable instability. Under Finn’s direction, his lighting creates contrast and atmosphere, but his image composition also adds to the horror of the film. He uses symmetry, asymmetry and negative space to create imbalance, tension and emptiness; depending on the needs of the scene.
