Shocking scenes usually have a purpose
CutlerPublished by BMG Rights Management (UK) Limited.. Movies have been taking some crazy turns lately and I’m here for it. Megalopolis was a pretty mess, Joker 2 was messy without being pretty (but it took risks I guess), Terrifier 3 made me really nauseous (I didn’t sleep well last night because I saw it last night too), and now The Apprentice is going to some really crazy places. There were a few moments where I wondered “are they allowed to show this?” I was shocked.
Will Trump sue?
I think the movie’s argument is presented without much subtlety, but I guess some people still think Jordan Belfort is cool based on The Wolf of Wall Street, so who knows. But then again, there is one very alarming scene in this movie that seems to be there to make it clear in no uncertain terms what the filmmakers think of Trump’s character. It will be the most controversial scene. Has he started that process yet?
I think that was the intention
There’s also a lack of follow-through to this scene that left me feeling even more uncomfortable and upset. Some people won’t like it—people who like and dislike Trump—and I wonder if this movie will be the Blonde to The Apprentice this year. The plot is very heavy in The Apprentice , and I don’t think it really knows how to end, but otherwise I found this movie to be captivating. The three leads—Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, and Maria Bakalova—are phenomenal.
This movie will stay with me for a while
Juxtaposing Trump’s rise with Roy Cohn’s fall was an inevitable angle to take, but it makes for an extremely compelling drama. It’s a straightforward movie, but there are nuances in parts that I think will spark discussion and/or argument. I don’t always like provocation, but when it feels intentional and backed up by good direction, I’m in.
